Canada is one of the most urbanized countries in the world, with just over 80% of its population living in cities. This is a dramatic increase from the 1920s, when roughly half of the country’s population was considered urban. Increasing concentrations of the country’s population in cities leverages the opportunity for economic growth in these areas, but also increases stress on infrastructure and services to serve the needs of increasingly diverse groups. As a result, Canada faces considerable challenges related to urbanization, such as access to housing, the inclusion of Aboriginal people and minority populations, urban poverty, and environmental sustainability among others. Given this context, Canada’s experiences related to managing diversity in urban contexts may be instructive for developing countries of the world such as China or African states, which are currently experiencing unprecedented rates of urbanization. This series of panels within ICCASU, “Sharing Canadian Urban Experiences” is co-organized by UN-Habitat and the University of Ottawa. Papers on issues related to new models for urbanization, community participation in urban planning, and other topics are especially welcome. These panels will provide a platform for scholars, professionals, policy-makers and the private sector to exchange views on the opportunities and challenges of urbanization in Canada today. Scholars and practitioners across disciplines are invited to submit abstracts and/or suggest specific panels corresponding with the themes listed below.
